Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (2013)

Pinot Noir grapes were hand-selected from two premier Sonoma Coast vineyards to produce this remarkable, award-winning wine.

Awards: Bronze from the Finger Lakes International Competition

Wine History: The Sonoma Coast is famous for rugged terrain, intense fog, and cool temperatures. We selected grapes from two vineyards to produce this rare Pinot Noir: one in the gravelly-clay soils of western Carneros, and the other farther north, in the loamy soil of the Petaluma wind gap. Extreme climates produce a focused and concentrated grape that proudly displays the range of the region's terroir.

Tasting Notes: A crushed raspberry and rose petal nose with subtle notes of loamy earth complement a silky texture that is the hallmark of Pinot Noir. This medium-body wine delivers a firm acidity that keeps the flavors moving on the palate and leaves you wanting more. Enjoy this beauty now or as its complexity evolves over the years. Pairs well with grilled salmon, pork ribs, duck, and tomato-based sauces.

Additional Notes: The grapes from Carneros were fermented in a pair of T-bins, small, insulated plastic fermenters accessible for the winemaker to smell the fermentation and do punch-downs by hand. Aging was in one neutral barrel and one new Francois-Fr¸ères, Allier forest, in medium toast.

The Petaluma wind gap batch was fermented in a small stainless-steel tank, with a combination of pump-overs and punchdowns gently extracting the color and flavor. Aging was in one neutral barrel and one new barrel from the Remond cooperage, a tight grain selection with a special medium-long toasting.

Both batches spent just under three weeks on the skins, and the wine was aged for 10 months without racking. The modest barrels allowed the flavors of the grapes and terroir to come through. The wine was bottled without filtration on August 1, 2012. Production was limited to 100 cases.
